A few years ago, I came up with the phrase Flow for It™ as my variation of the phrase Go for It.

"Flow for it" has become one of my core mottos. It's even on the screensaver on my computers.

I came up with this motto because I was really tired of the concept of "Go for it," which feels like a "Rah-rah, You can do it! You got this!" kind of message. While there's nothing wrong with any of that, what I've found is that in recent years, that kind of thinking and those kinds of phrases don't truly support me. They encouraged me to think and act in old ways, which led me to burnout and mental and physical exhaustion. I do not want to live that way again.

Whenever I see the phrase "Flow for it" on my screensavers, and when I think of that phrase or say it out loud, I feel so much lighter, freer, and expansive because it embodies what I've come to learn and what I am continuing to practice, which is flowing through my life; trusting and feeling and sensing the energy of my own body and nervous system, my emotions, what feels good in any day, in any moment.

If things feel good, I want to do more of those things. And if things don't feel good, I try to do less of those things—or figure out a better way to do them so that they can feel better to me.

You may have heard about "flow states" and "getting into the flow," as in literally getting into a particular kind of mental state. Those concepts sync up with this. I believe that part of "Flow for it" is about being present. It's really hard to "Flow for it" while being stuck in regret of the past or anxious worrying about the future.

Envision a creek or a river and a leaf going with the flow of the water. It's not stuck back on the tree where it just fell from. It's not somewhere downstream in the future. It is right where it is in the flow of this water at the moment you see it. When you're genuinely in some kind of flow, you're right there. You're in it. You're not where you used to be and not where you're going to be. You're right here, right now. I like all of that. I like how that feels to me.

I invite you to consider how this phrase, "Flow for it," feels to you. And see how "Go for it," feels to you. See if you, like me, have that old phrase connected with a lot of busyness, exhaustion, and chasing.

If you "Flow for it," you can still go for something. You can still be heading toward a destination. And yet, if you're really in that flow, you're not as likely to get stuck in the process of chasing and doing; there's more room to "be". And the more I can be IN my life, the more peace of mind I have, the calmer I am... and then everything is better.

So, if you like my motto, go ahead and put it on your screensaver, phone, or wherever you like so that you can anchor it. See what it does for you in your life and the way that you're living.

Who would you have to be to "Flow for it"?

What would you have to be doing differently if you were to embody the concept of "Flow for it"?

What would change if you were to "Flow for it"?

“Go with the flow. You can't control the whole sea; the only thing you can control is your ship.”
